BUILD YOUR CAREER AROUND YOUR STRENGTHS

Build your career around your strengths, not your weaknesses.

This isn’t just a nice idea. It’s a principle I believe in deeply, because I’ve seen the impact it can have (in my career coaching clients’ lives, and in my own career).

Time and time again, I’ve watched people come alive when they stop obsessing over what they lack, and start building from what makes them strong.

Why? Because we already live in a world obsessed with fixing what’s wrong.

From school to performance reviews, the focus is: “Here’s where you need to improve.”

It’s no wonder most people can answer “what’s your biggest weakness?” faster than “what are your greatest strengths?”

But why do we tend to over-index on our weaknesses?

1️⃣ We live in a “fixing” society: where daily we are reminded how to get better, fitter, more efficient, more effective. It’s never-ending. We live in a constant state of “not quite there yet.” More strategy. More creativity. More details  (Just a little more and you’ll be enough… right? Your ‘original sin’ will finally be forgiven.)

2️⃣ We experience negativity bias: We weigh negative data more than positive data. This tendency probably benefited us evolutionarily by helping us stay cautious. Now, however, it causes us to discount positive information, making it hard for us to value our strengths.

3️⃣ We devalue what comes most naturally to us: We might do this because we wrongly assume that what’s easy for us must be easy for everyone, or because these strengths are so core to our being that we simply overlook them.

I often meet clients who’ve forgotten the best parts of themselves. Or worse, they’ve never had anyone genuinely reflect them back.

That’s why, one of my favorite exercises as a coach to change this perception is this:

✅ Ask people who know you — friends, family, colleagues — what they believe your unique strengths are (they directly send the feedback to me)

✅ Look for patterns.

✅ Then write a short description of yourself(or your ideal job) based on that input.

The reactions of my clients when I read back the feedback received are heartwarming.

People light up. Sometimes tears come to their eyes.

They are, for once, seen not for what they do, or who they’re trying to become, but for who they already are. They can finally breathe.

That moment of recognition? That’s where real confidence begins.

Let’s be clear. This doesn’t mean ignoring areas for growth.

Improve what matters, ask for help, outsource when needed.

But don’t let your entire career be a response to your weaknesses.

Because when you play to your strengths, something shifts.

Work starts to feel lighter. More natural. More you. You’re not being pushed down. You can finally shine with your own light.

Whatever you’re facing in your career, remember those strengths. ✊
